Circus Ringmaster
The ringmaster traditionally wears a top hat, a red coat with tails and prominent brass buttons, a twirly moustache and a whip. You should speak with a loud booming voice and order everyone at the circus around. A great costume for those who like to be the boss.
Lion Tamer
A lion tamer is pretty much the same costume as the ring master but with more emphasis on the whipping and the animals. You can team the costume with either a stuffed lion toy or even get one of your friends to dress up as a lion. This can be a funny costume for couples as well. The guy can dress up as a lion and the lady can wear a sexy lion tamer outfit.
Strongman
The classic circus strongman wears a spotty leopard print off the shoulder leotard. Team that up with a twirly moustache and a fake set of barbells and you are good to go.
Clown
No circus is complete without a troupe of clowns but how do you make the perfect clown outfit? There are different types of clowns so you’ll have to pick the one which is right for you. The classic costume that most people think of first is known as the white face clown. The face is covered in white face paint, with an over sized mouth painted in red and over the top features such as eyebrows made with black face paint.
The face paint is teamed up with some typical clown accessories. Loud, colorful, silly clothing, a brash bright colored wig and clown shoes. A good example of a ‘silly’ piece of clothing is a tiny hat. It is obviously too small for the clown’s head but he wears it anyway.
Knife Thrower and Glamorous Assistant
The knife thrower in the circus throws knives at his glamorous assistant. The assistant, usually female but for a laugh you can switch the typical gender roles, has things like an apple on her head which the thrower tries to spear with the knife. This makes for a fun costume. The assistant can be dressed up in a catsuit or other shiny leotard outfit. They can wear and apple shaped hat on their head. You can also pretend that the assistant has been stabbed with the knife by creating a fake wound and spreading some blood around.
Bearded Lady
This is a funny costume which is easy to make. The bearded lady was a circus freak show act – simply a lady with a beard. So just take a normal glamorously dressed lady and add a fake beard. If you are a large hairy male then just grow out your beard and don a dress for the night.
Sword Swallower
Go for a normal formal suit, or spangly circus wear for girls, and then take a fake sword along with you.
Trapeze Artist
The trapeze artist is famous for high wire stunts. A simple or spangly leotard will do and then make your own trapeze out of paper mache. Often a trapeze artist sports a plume of feathers on the top of their head. Oh and don’t forget the fishnet tights.
Elephant
Elephants are a famous circus animal, just think of Dumbo, and it can be a lot of fun to dress up as one. There are lots of super cute elephant costumes for children and toddlers if you are bring a little one along to a circus theme costume party. You could even brings a little ball to balance on as a trick.
